The newly-renovated 295-room Marriott Country Club Plaza hotel in Kansas City has been chosen as the 2013 IAJRC Convention venue. The hotel’s rooms have high-speed internet access/wi-fi (free for convention attendees), coffee/tea makers and all the usual facilities that you’d expect. There is a bar, two restaurants and a coffee shop, as well as a business center, fitness center and a swimming pool. All convention attendees staying at the hotel will get 50% off the hotel’s breakfast buffet (saving $8) and a free drink in the lobby lounge each day. There is also a free hotel shuttle that will take you to Country Club Plaza and pick you up again after your visit.
The Country Club Plaza is KC’s premier retail, dining and entertainment area, located within old-world Spanish-style architecture. More Information on the Plaza and Kansas City can be found at www.visitkc.com.
Think of Bennie Moten, Count Basie, Mary Lou Williams,; Lester Young, Jay McShann and Charlie Parker and you think of Kansas City. During the 1920’s and ’30’s Kansas City was one of the major jazz cities in the world. The area around 18th and Vine was filled to the brim with clubs and speakeasies that featured the best jazz musicians around. Today, Kansas City still revels in it’s past musical heritage, and is the home of the American Jazz Museum (www.americanjazzmuseum.com) and the Marr Sound Archives (www.library.umkc.edu/marr) which is located less than a mile from the hotel and easily reached using the hotel shuttle or a taxi. The Archives are home to thousands of jazz and blues sound recordings, vintage radio programs, sheet music; original arrangements and recordings in a wide range of historic formats including LPs, 78s, 45s, cylinders, transcription discs, open-reel tapes, vintage phonographs and much more!
Via Air: The hotel is 26 miles south of Kansas City airport. The airport Super Shuttle which drops you off and picks you up at your hotel, takes around 40 minutes and costs just $19. A taxi costs in the region of $60, so if you are traveling alone the shuttle is your best bet.
Via Rail: For those who prefer to take the train, the Marriott CCP is only a short taxi ride from KC’s Union Station. Kansas City is easily accessible by rail from most major US cities.
Via Automobile: Kansas City is easily accessible by road from most parts of the US. On-site parking at the hotel is a reasonable $15 per day, with valet parking at $19 per day.
Those of you who have attended any of the recent Chicago, Manchester or New Orleans conventions, will know what to expect in Kansas City. If this is your first convention, then you’ll find
