Aretha Franklin will be honored with the Institute’s Maria Fisher Founder’s Award as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz celebrates its 25th anniversary with the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition and 25th Anniversary Gala Concert on September 12, 2011 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The event is sponsored by Cadillac and co-chaired by Madeleine Albright, Quincy Jones, Debra Lee and Colin Powell.

As part of the evening, three finalists will compete for scholarships and a recording contract with Concord Music Group. The evening will feature Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition winners from the past 25 years performing a special tribute to the life and music of Thelonious Monk.
