CD Reviews: Susie Arioli..Night Lights..2008
Posted by: editoron Wednesday, December 03, 2008 - 09:10 PM
Reviews By John Gilbert

Susie Arioli (vocals, snare) Jordan Officer (guitar, vocals) Bill
Gossage (bass, vocals)..Special Guests Michael Jerome Browne (guitar)
Cameron Wallis (saxes) Christopher Smith (tbone) Dany Roy (tenor) Aron
Doyle (Flugelhorn) Remi Leclerc (percussions)

Rich and warm is the byword for Susie Arioli's voice which can be
smokier than a speakasy.

Arioli sings "Blue Skies" straight and gets it all with no undue clutter
or fuss. Jordan Officer's guitar strums and struts most emphatically.

"The Very Thought Of You" is pure magic and Arioli casts a musical spell
that is a pure delight. She treats these lyrics like she means every
word and that is the true test of a singer with a message.

I always think of Bobby Darin when I hear "Beyond The Sea" but Arioli
made me forget BD for the time it took for this song to play. I am quite
taken with the texture of Susie Arioli's sound, her phrasing and
delivery.

"You Go To My Head" There is lots of fertile ground to till here. The
song is a classic and then some, and Arioli sings this tune so soulfully
that it would make angels cry.

Every tune on this album is well chosen and each is sung by this fine
artist in a most remarkable manner. There is no need to get the
jeweler's loup out on this recording because the vocals and
accompaniment speak for themselves. Susie Arioli is certainly the sine
qua non of this CD. It gets no better than this.
