By John Gilbert
Jimmy Cannon is indeed a proper jazz singer with marvelous texture to
his voice. His interpretations of these standards are gems.
"You Go To My Head" is an exquisite example of the vocal mastery of
Jimmy Cannon with a great band backing him and adding just the right
amount of drive.
"All Of You" Cannon has all the attributes to present to the jazz
world, a true sense of jazz singing, as it were. Brief solos by the sax
and trumpet are noteworthy.
"A Foggy Day" This song has a brightly swinging quality that makes
one's toe tap. 4 bar exchanges with Cannon scatting with the
instrumentalists is a trip. Jimmy Cannon gets after this tune magically.
This stuff can't be taught.
"Skylark" There is a bit of King Pleasure in the texture of Jimmy
Cannon's voice, albeit with a bit more muscle. He balladizes beautifully
on this number.
"Slow Boat To China" A sporty piano intro leads us to the vocal and the
arrangement is artfully written by Murray Morrison. This composition,
like every tune on this album, swings high wide and handsome.
Jimmy Cannon has all one needs to be a major force in the jazz vocal
business. I am happy to give this album 5 big stars....Go Jimmy!!!!!
