By Glenn Astarita
Jazz cellist extraordinaire Erik Friedlander and his “Topaz” quartet explore North African rhythms and Middle Eastern modalities on its fourth release. With regimented precision coupled with a loose improvisational gait, the band morphs mood-evoking notions into its rather broad musical scope. At times playful with asymmetrical injections of dissonance, the unit also often generates hybrid, jazz-world music elements via buoyant themes and African cadences.
Alto saxophonist Andy Laster engages in sonorous unison lines with Friedlander while also venturing into the red zone on occasion. Electric bassist Stomu Takeishi and his brother Satoshi harness an air of excitement via a combination of jazz-fusion type grit and forcefulness to complement their organic soundscapes. Teeming with perky rhythms and thumping grooves the band incorporates memorably melodic tunes into segments of heated group-based exchanges. On “Najime,” Friedlander and Laster shrewdly incorporate a layered effect amid an ominous undercurrent, enamored with a whirling dervish-like primary theme. Overall, Friedlander’s latest endeavor intimates a striking viewpoint of the seemingly limitless capabilities modern jazz has to offer. (Strongly recommended…)
