CD Reviews: The Jimmy Cannon Big Band: All Together
Posted by: adminon Friday, March 03, 2006 - 07:19 AM
Reviews By Edward Blanco

It gives me great pleasure to report that big band jazz music is alive, well and going strong. Just when you think you’ve heard it all, along comes a new album of wonderful big band stuff with new and interesting material. Such is the case with All ToGetHer, the first recording for The Jimmy Cannon Big Band from London. Singer/saxophonist and band leader Jimmy Cannon put together some pretty good charts and brought together some of the finest musicians in London to form his big band for this project. An essential element of this recording are the wonderful arrangements of the music provided by Evan Jolly and saxophonist Murray Morrison.

Unlike most big band albums this one features the band leader on vocals in all but one track. Cannon’s unique baritone voice adds a certain swing feel to the music. Another pleasurable surprise to me was the band. Cannon’s band contains a reed section of no less than five saxes, a full set of horns, trombones and a four piece rhythm group comprising a swinging seventeen piece ensemble that can really cook a tune. The recording is replete with excellent solo performances from members of the band other than Cannon.

The album contains a terrific musical selection of timeless classic tunes such as “You Go To My Head,” Cole Porter’s “All Of You,” Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day,” Hoagie Carmichael’s “Skylark,” which Cannon expresses well and the great jazz standard “Body and Soul,” the only instrumental of the ten track album which finds Cannon with a beautiful solo on tenor.

I give this album thumbs up. A recording of time honored jazz standards in the finest tradition of contemporary big band music. Intelligent charts, excellent musicianship and a distinctive singing style, mark this album a must listen for lovers of the genre.
