JAZZ.FM91 (CJRT-FM Inc.) STUDIOS AND OFFICES MOVING TO NEW PREMISES
Posted by: editoron Tuesday, March 21, 2006 - 06:31 PM
Jazz News After nearly 14 years occupying Ryerson University property on Mutual Street,
‘Canada’s Premier Jazz Station’ begins broadcasting from its new home April 3rd, 2006.

(Toronto – March 21, 2006) – JAZZ.FM91 will relocate to contemporary new premises in downtown Toronto when the radio station moves its operations at the end of this month to street front facilities on Pardee Avenue in the King & Dufferin area known as Liberty Village. Today’s announcement came from Bernard Webber, long-time Chairman of JAZZ.FM91’s board of directors who said the move culminates nearly 14 years during which JAZZ.FM91 has broadcast from the Ryerson University building it currently occupies at 150 Mutual Street.

“91.1 on the FM dial will continue to provide a window for the discriminating listener,” Webber commented. “Although we will be broadcasting from a new location, our mission will remain constant. As an educational-based charity our focus has always been on excellence and faithful stewardship of the mandate and resources provided by our listeners and supporters. Our donors and advertisers can be assured these will continue to be our guiding principles,” he said.

Ross Porter, President and Chief Executive Officer for JAZZ.FM91 said, “With the opportunity to influence design of the new space to accommodate our current needs as well as our plans for adding features once we’re fully operational at that location, we have been able to streamline our occupancy there to make optimum use of the premises in the most cost-effective manner.”

Among other features to be announced in more detail when planning is complete is a 15-seat screening room where JAZZ.FM91 will host showings of jazz documentaries, educational films, and recorded concerts, as well as provide a venue for intimate seminars and workshops. The new facilities will also house a live performance area where shows such as Joe Sealy’s popular “Duets” will be recorded for broadcast before a live studio audience.

JAZZ.FM91 is Canada’s only not-for-profit radio station dedicated to jazz and all of its communities of interest. This important alternative radio voice covers 95% of Ontario through a combination of on-air coverage from the CN Tower, through most cable systems in the province, via satellite (Bell ExpressVu, Channel 960 and Starchoice, Channel 869), and the Internet (www.jazz.fm). Originally a non-commercial, listener-supported radio station known as CJRT-FM, the station was born 32 years ago out of the former Ryerson Polytechnic training radio station. When government support ceased in 1996, necessitating restructuring as a self-sustaining public broadcaster, CJRT-FM expanded programming to include an educational component, classical music, and jazz. From January of 2001, the station known since that time as JAZZ.FM91 has focused both programming and outreach initiatives on jazz, supporting its endeavors through membership, limited advertising, special events, and grants from corporations and foundations. President and Chief Executive Officer of JAZZ.FM91 since July of 2004 is Ross Porter, widely acknowledged as Canada’s preeminent jazz broadcaster.

While the radio station’s mailing address will become 4 Pardee Avenue, Unit 100, Toronto ON M6K 3H5, the telephone and fax numbers will remain the same (phone 416-595-0404; fax 416-595-9413).
