Dedicated to Jim Hendrix, this album signifies electric guitarist Prasanna’s infusion of bone-crunching guitar phrasings with East Indian modalities, ragas and jazz-rock initiatives. The artist prefaces this endeavor by instilling imagery of India’s cultural-centric existence, alluding to the scents of incense, curry and (amusingly) C++ programmers.
Prasanna slams the proverbial pedal to the metal during many of these pieces that often conjure up visualizations of early ‘70s psych rock. But the overriding twist pertains to the guitarist’s zinging crunch chords and sinewy East Indian lines intertwined with raga motifs and indigenous East Indian percussion vamps. On “Indra’s Necklace,” Prasanna executes a distortion-drenched anthem style theme, while toning the session down during the somber ballad, “Bowling For Peace.” In sum, not many jazz oriented musicians have successfully melded these disparate harmonic and cultural entities which as much tenacity and power. Therefore, Prasanna has it all down to a thoroughly enjoyable science on this mood-evoking set that offers more than just a few cleverly articulated propositions. (Recommended…)
