Bruford/Borstlap - “In Two Minds” - CD-2007 Summerfold Records
Posted by: editoron Friday, February 22, 2008 - 08:24 PM
Glenn Astarita

The musicians’ third documented collaboration was recorded live in Norway and the U.K. Following up the widely-acclaimed and altogether fascinating DVD, titled “In Concert In Holland,” the artists intuitive duets on this release are not enamored with over-dubs or gobs of after-the-fact studio processing. Therefore, the musicians are portrayed under the umbrella of innate musicianship sans any frills, although the crystalline sonic characteristics prevail throughout.

Putting styles aside, the duo effortlessly works through swing metrics and investigative enacted improv, generally shaded with a sense of playfulness and triumph. On the piece titled “Flirt,” Bill Bruford kicks in a solid backbeat via his patented diversions and uncanny permutations of time. And it’s all countered by Michiel Borstlap’s dark and sinuous Fender Rhodes lines. They navigate knotty time-signatures, featuring call and response episodes, also firmed-up by grooves that are steeped within the prog-rock domain. At times the music sparks notions of rolling hills and narrow passageways amid a few bursts of speed and turbo-charged maneuvers. They even venture into world-music during “Conference of the Bees,” where Bruford employs his log-drum to offset his metronome-like bass drum and hi-hat pulse.

The program consists of impacting polyrhythmic flows and funky motifs, sometimes contrasted with understated thematic forays and the musicians’ easy-going gait. No doubt, nicely-defined dynamics and mood-evoking sentiment serve as common denominator of sorts. To that end, let’s hope this musical journey continues to flourish. In effect, the musicians most noticeably bring out the best in each other. Not that this inference looms as a tall order, but more importantly makes for a comprehensive and continually entertaining event that professes the utmost in artistic resolve. – Glenn Astarita
