CD Reviews: Pete Zimmer Quartet..Chillin' Live @ The Jazz Factory..Tippin Records 2008

Reviews Pete Zimmer (drums) Jeremy Pelt (tpt & Floogie) Avi Rothbard (guitar)
David Wong (bass)

By John Gilbert

Recorded live in Louisville, Ky. at the Jazz Factory, Pete Zimmer has
released another gem in true jazz fashion.

"Doxy", penned by Sonny Rollins is introduced by Jeremy Pelt's trumpet,
followed by the sashaying guitar of Avi Rothbard as he struts in a blues
bag and he gets it all and then some.

"Common Man" Jeremy Pelt reprises Miles Davis' muted horn and Mr
Rothbard's guitar makes the toes tap. Zimmer's time is nuclear perfect
as he plays with restraint (as this tune dictates). Pete Zimmer is a
drummer who never overplays. Pelt's trumpet is more aggressive than
Miles and swings more.

"From This Moment On" is the showcase tune on this album. Done at a
rapid fire tempo it swings from beginning to end. Again Pelt is in a
Miles mode and Rothbard is on this tune like he owns it. He has no
problem with he tempo and swing like the 'Flying Wallenda's'. Pete
Zimmer is time perfect again as he backs the soloists with aplomb and
elegance. Pelt releases a torrent of notes and his solo shows why 'free
jazz' is becoming increasingly irrelevant. His soliloquy is proof of
that. (Talk about Tinker to Evers to Chance! the 8 bar exchanges on this
number are proof that pure jazz is here to stay.)
