Edmonton Jazz City Festival Succumbs

A report that Jazz City in Edmonton, one of Canada's two oldest jazz festivals with a 25-year history, would not be held in 2005 because of persistent financial problems.

The acting president of the Jazz City Festival Society said it carried a debt of about $200,000 owed to roughly 50 creditors, after the Edmonton Arts Council rejected its application for a $90,000 grant. Among the unpaid performers from the 2004 anniversary festival was singer Sheila Jordan, who had also appeared at the first Jazz City in 1980.
