A report, from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, that Hawaii-born critic Nate Chinen had won the Helen Dance-Robert Palmer Award for excellence in feature and review writing at the 10th annual Jazz Journalists Association Awards, announced in New York on June 19, 2006.

It was his second JJA honor, after sharing the 2004 award for best book about jazz with George Wein for Wein's memoir Myself Among Others. Chinen had then been writing for The New York Times for about a year.
