Wajdi Cherif: Phrygian Istikhbar (Wech Records)

Originally published on eJazzNews · · By Paul Donnelly · CD Reviews

Paul Donnelly reviewed Phrygian Istikhbar by Tunisian pianist and composer Wajdi Cherif, billed as Tunisian acoustic jazz, and found that the mix of Tunisian melody and rhythm with a jazz group worked.

He singled out Diego Imbert's bass, the interplay of piano and percussion (bendir and derbouka) on El Casba, the more romantic trio playing on Waiting for Paris and the development of the title track.
