Jay McShann: Goin’ to Kansas City (Stony Plain)

Originally published on eJazzNews · · By John Taylor · CD Reviews

John Taylor reviewed Goin' to Kansas City, an album by pianist Jay McShann on Stony Plain, recorded when McShann was in his eighties.

Taylor wrote that, although McShann revisited tunes such as Trouble in Mind and When I Grow Too Old to Dream, the record had too much energy to be heard as a farewell, and recalled McShann's role in Kansas City jazz and in giving Charlie Parker his first big break.
